How working with your body's internal clock may support glucose regulation, blood pressure, and metabolic health

Our bodies follow a daily pattern. Hormones rise and fall, body temperature changes, hunger comes and goes, and energy use shifts throughout the day. Much of this is guided by the circadian rhythm, our internal 24-hour clock.

Although it is best known for controlling sleep and wakefulness, this system also influences glucose regulation, insulin sensitivity, fat metabolism, blood pressure, and energy use. When our routines become misaligned with it, these processes can be affected.

Your Metabolism Has a Clock

Researchers are increasingly interested in chrono-nutrition, or how the timing of food intake interacts with our internal clock.

Our response to food can vary depending on the time of day. In one study, shifting sleep and meal schedules away from participants' usual patterns increased glucose, insulin, and average blood pressure levels while reducing sleep efficiency. Some participants also experienced post-meal glucose levels within a range typically associated with prediabetes.

Glucose tolerance also tends to be lower at night than in the morning. A 2018 study found that circadian misalignment reduced insulin sensitivity, suggesting that when we eat may matter alongside what we eat.

Why Meal Timing May Matter

This has led researchers to look more closely at eating patterns, particularly whether consuming meals earlier in the day may offer benefits.

In a 2018 study of men with prediabetes, participants ate within a six-hour window and finished eating by 3 p.m. After five weeks, they showed improvements in insulin sensitivity, blood pressure, beta-cell function, and markers of oxidative stress, even without weight loss.

Other research has found similar potential benefits. A 2022 randomized clinical trial found that early time-restricted eating helped adults with obesity lose more weight than a control schedule and improved diastolic blood pressure. More recent research in adults with metabolic syndrome also found improvements in glucose control and other measures of cardiometabolic health with an eight- to ten-hour eating window.

These findings do not mean that everyone needs to follow a strict fasting schedule. Rather, they highlight that meal timing and consistency may be worth considering alongside food quality and portion size.

Light and Sleep Help Set the Clock

Food is only one factor that helps keep the circadian system on track. Light is one of its strongest signals. Morning light helps reinforce the body's daytime schedule, while too much light at night can shift its timing and interfere with sleep. Light exposure is also connected to the way the body manages blood sugar and energy.

Sleep plays a closely related role. Going to bed at unusual times or frequently changing your sleep schedule can interfere with the processes that normally follow a day-night cycle. Research has found that disrupting sleep and meal timing can reduce sleep efficiency while increasing blood sugar and blood pressure.

That is one reason consistent sleep is an important part of cardiometabolic health, not simply a matter of feeling rested.

Movement Can Support Glucose Regulation

Physical activity offers another simple way to support glucose control. After eating, blood glucose naturally rises as nutrients are absorbed. When muscles contract during movement, they take up glucose and use it for energy, which can help moderate that increase.

A review of several studies found that exercising after meals reduced post-meal glucose more effectively than exercising before meals or remaining inactive. The benefit was especially noticeable when movement occurred soon after eating.

This does not require an intense workout. A short walk after a meal can be an easy way to incorporate movement into your day.

Working With Your Rhythm

Circadian biology influences many processes related to cardiovascular and metabolic function, including insulin sensitivity, fat metabolism, and blood pressure.
